Shape NC

Shape NC is a statewide initiative to prevent early childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and access to improved outdoor play spaces for children ages birth to five.

The obesity epidemic:

  • Children who are obese by age 6 have greater than a 50% likelihood of becoming obese adults. Almost a third of adult North Carolinians are obese.
  • Obese children are 6X more likely than children with healthy weights to have an impaired quality of life – equal to that of children undergoing treatment for cancer (Journal of the American Medical Association).
  • Approximately 30% of Buncombe County’s young children are enrolled in regulated child care centers, where they receive most meals and spend most of their waking hours (NCDCDEE).
  • Almost 30% of young children in Buncombe County are overweight or obese (NC-NPASS).

 What do we do?

  • Shape NC helps communities and child care centers develop environments, practices and policies that encourage young children to be healthy. Three major statewide programs are used to support the implementation of Shape NC: Be Active Kids, Go NAP SACC, and the Natural Learning Initiative.
