Child Care Is Essential & Needs Emergency Support to Survive
Now more than ever, child care is crucial for our community’s safety, security & economy.
Early childhood educators are on the front lines in the face of COVID-19. By opening their arms to the children of essential workers who maintain our health and safety, child care professionals have proven to be the backbone of an effective response to the coronavirus crisis. Their dedication will last far beyond the immediate wave of the pandemic, and we must invest in caring for young children to prepare working families to rebound from this crisis.
Parents and children need stability, and access to child care is one of the most important components of family security. Crucially, our neighbors with limited resources will be negatively impacted to the strongest degree if child care centers are forced to delay reopening or close their doors because of the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 will severely impact the child care sector at a time when Buncombe County must expand the child care workforce and increase the number of available child care slots.
That’s why Buncombe Partnership for Children is committed to helping the child care community stay the course during the crisis and beyond. Any individual who is part of the health, safety, and basic operations of our community should be able to get dependable, high quality child care. Child care programs must have the stability and the resources to reopen the moment that families are ready to head back to work and to send their children back to child care.
Please help teachers, families, and our most vulnerable children by making an emergency gift now. Your investment will help to:
- Stock child care centers with health-related equipment (e.g. thermometers, gloves, cleaning supplies).
- Fortify resources in centers remaining open to the children of essential personnel, working families, and those seeking employment (e.g. diapers, wipes, play materials).
- Help child care providers meet costs associated with stringent health and safety requirements (e.g., spray nozzles to efficiently disperse cleaning solutions on outdoor play equipment).
- Protect teachers’ mental health by underwriting resiliency training and shared service employee assistance programs.
You can ensure our youngest children still have the very best start in life with the support of the teachers who love and care for them. Come what may, working families and the child care community will count on the folks who invest in early childhood. Become part of that vision by giving today.

The Case for Investment: The First 2,000 Days
Buncombe County’s youngest children are the community’s most treasured resource — and among its most vulnerable populations. For children to reach their full potential they need safe and supportive environments, nurturing relationships, and enriching early childhood experiences. There are 13,500 children ages birth to 5 years old in Buncombe County. Support during the first 2,000 days of life is crucial for helping every child to thrive.
In our community:
- Year-round, full-day child care costs $9,000+ per child, on average.
- 70% of children are not enrolled in licensed child care.
- Families are often on a waitlist for 12+ months for a child care slot.
- 46% of children in Buncombe County live in poor or low-income households.
Your involvement is key to changing this landscape.
Local priorities for young children, families, and teachers include:
- High-quality, affordable child care for working families.
- Programs to support healthy eating, physical activity, and outdoor play.
- Workforce development for early educators.
- Free programs that encourage families to read, play, and bond.
Because today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders, parents, and workforce, everyone has a stake in making sure that all of Buncombe’s children have what they need to flourish. When we invest in children during the first 2,000 days, we create the best outcomes in education, health, and economic wellbeing for everyone in our community.
