Child Care Is Essential &
Needs Emergency Support to Survive
Services are crucial for the good of children, families & businesses and our community’s safety, security & economy
This is one of the most important fundraising requests we have ever had to make.
During this time of extreme need, working parents and their children need stability more than ever, and access to child care — or a lack thereof — is one of the greatest threats to the framework of family security.
Crucially, our neighbors with limited resources — who often rely most heavily on access to affordable, high quality child care — will be negatively and immediately impacted to the strongest degree.
The COVID-19 crisis could, in the long term, severely impact the child care sector at a time when we are focused on expanding the workforce and trying to increase child care slots.
That’s why Buncombe Partnership for Children would like to ask you to help us through this incredibly difficult period by making an emergency gift now.
We anticipate the extra funding will:
- Stock child care centers with health-related equipment (e.g. thermometers, gloves, cleaning supplies)
- Fortify resources in centers remaining open to the children of essential personnel (e.g. diapers, wipes, play materials)
- Purchase and deliver extra food to child care classrooms
- Pay substitute teachers a living wage
We are in daily contact with the folks we work with in the field, and we are receiving updates on their challenges and how we can help in this unprecedented situation. With the fluidity of the current environment, we expect the extraordinary expenses we face to evolve. We will continue to update you on what your donations will fund as new needs arise.
We are enormously proud of our role in the community and our tireless dedication to Buncombe County’s youngest children. We are determined that come what may, working families and the child care community can continue to count on us for critical support, not only during the current crisis but long into the future. Please protect young children, families, and early educators from the ongoing impacts of coronavirus by giving today.

The Case for Investment: The First 2,000 Days
Buncombe County’s youngest children are the community’s most treasured resource — and among its most vulnerable populations. For children to reach their full potential they need safe and supportive environments, nurturing relationships, and enriching early childhood experiences. There are 13,500 children ages birth to 5 years old in Buncombe County. Support during the first 2,000 days of life is crucial for helping every child to thrive.
In our community:
- Year-round, full-day child care costs $9,000+ per child, on average.
- 70% of children are not enrolled in licensed child care.
- Families are often on a waitlist for 12+ months for a child care slot.
- 46% of children in Buncombe County live in poor or low-income households.
Your involvement is key to changing this landscape.
Local priorities for young children, families, and teachers include:
- High-quality, affordable child care for working families.
- Programs to support healthy eating, physical activity, and outdoor play.
- Workforce development for early educators.
- Free programs that encourage families to read, play, and bond.
Because today‘s children are tomorrow’s leaders, parents, and workforce, everyone has a stake in making sure that all of Buncombe’s children have what they need to flourish. When we invest in children during the first 2,000 days, we create the best outcomes in education, health, and economic wellbeing for everyone in our community.
