Reading with young children supports their imagination and early literacy skills. It also instills a love of reading early on, leading to school success. Buncombe Partnership for Children is collaborating with Literacy Together to offer Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
WHAT IS DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION IN LIBRARY (DPIL)?
DPIL provides a free, hardcover book monthly to children living in Buncombe County ages birth up to five years old. Participating children receive an age appropriate book each month, mailed directly to the child from the time of registration until age 5. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library supports preparing children for kindergarten by exposing children to the concepts of print, encouraging child/parent reading, and increasing early literacy skills.
Watch this great profile on PBS!
When the program launched in November 2015, just 200 children were enrolled in the Imagination Library. Today, over 4,200 families are a part of the program, thanks in large part to community support. Just $25 provides one whole year of free books to a child, and we are excited to grow the program.
