Reading with young children supports their imagination and early literacy skills. It also instills a love of reading early on, leading to school success. Buncombe Partnership for Children is collaborating with The Literacy Council of Buncombe County to offer Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
WHAT IS DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION IN LIBRARY (DPIL)?
DPIL provides a free, hardcover book monthly to children living in Buncombe County ages birth up to five years old. Participating children receive an age appropriate book each month, mailed directly to the child from the time of registration until age 5. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library supports preparing children for kindergarten by exposing children to the concepts of print, encouraging child/parent reading, and increasing early literacy skills.
HOW MANY CHILDREN DO YOU SERVE?
In November 2015, we started with 200 children enrolled; now over 2000 children are a part of the program, thanks in large part to community support. Our goal is to continue to grow.
HOW CAN I REGISTER?
As long as your child lives in Buncombe County as is between birth and five years old, they are eligible!
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
A $25 donation will cover the monthly cost of the books and postage for one child for a full year. Individual and group donations are accepted year round. Click here to donate now. Consider asking your book club to join you and support a child for a full five years in the program. Email Carol Ann Willhite, Fund Development Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to schedule a speaker to come out and talk to your book group about this program!
