Environment Rating Scales
The Environmental Rating Scales are a series of assessments that are used to help determine quality in Early Childhood Education. The tool measures features in a classroom such as schedule, materials, and space. The three assessments used in the state of North Carolina are the ITERS-R (ages birth-2.5) the ECERS-R (ages 2.5-5), and the FCCERS-R, which is designed to assess family childcare programs.
Scoring well on the ERS assessments takes preparation and practice. Our Early Childhood Program Consultants can meet with educators and directors to help prepare for the ERS process by performing mock assessments and collaborating on technical assistance in order to enhance or maintain the quality of the classrooms and program. Consultations are available to all childcare providers, but may be prioritized based on facilities’ assessment due dates.
