Invisible Sentence: Advocating for Children of Incarcerated Parents

Melissa Radcliff, program director at Our Children’s Place of Coastal Horizons, will share what the program has learned about children of incarcerated and returning parents and work to create a community where they are acknowledged, supported, and encouraged to share their stories. Our Children’s Place is a statewide program committed to the children of incarcerated and returning parents. They strive to be the leading North Carolina advocate and educational resource focused on these children and the need for a statewide response to ensure their well-being.

Melissa Radcliff has been with Our Children’s Place of Coastal Horizons Center based in Wilmington, NC since February 2007. Our Children’s Place is a statewide education and advocacy program focused on community support for children of incarcerated and returning parents. Prior to that she was the Executive Director and a founding staff member of the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County (now the Compass Center for Women and Families), the local domestic violence agency serving Orange County, NC. She has worked in the area of victim services since the 1990s at a domestic violence agency, rape crisis center, prosecutor’s office, and police department in Rhode Island, Arizona, and North Carolina. She is currently overseeing the FRESH (Family Re-Entry Support and Help) grant in 13 re-entry prison facilities.

Training Guidelines:

1. Arrival to meeting: Please connectup to 5 minutes early to make sure your technology is working.

2. Participation: We believe you get more out of the training if you participate actively. We expect all participants to have their camera’s on, ask their questions and share relevant experiences. Participants are required to join in a stationary location, not while driving a car! We want you to be safe and able to focus on the content of the training.

3. Confidentiality: Agree to protect and respect confidentiality of children’s and teacher’s names.
