Shape NC is an initiative to prevent early childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and access to improved outdoor play spaces for children ages birth to five.
Shape NC helps communities and child care centers develop environments and policies that encourage young children to be healthy. Three major programs are used to support the implementation of Shape NC: Be Active Kids, Go NAP SACC (Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care) and the Natural Learning Initiative. Shape NC provides technical assistance and training for child care centers in Buncombe County. The 2017 participating centers are Asheville City Schools Preschool, Asheville High School Child Care Center, Isaac Dickson Preschool, First Presbyterian, and Weaverville Head Start.
The Community engagement section of this work includes two Photovoice Projects with Asheville City schools parents and collaboration with Asheville Adventure Play, a group organizing pop-up adventure playgrounds in Buncombe County.
